University of Kentucky
The University of Kentucky Engineering and Forestry Departments were testing the ability to reclaim coal-mined lands through reforestation, and to be used as a source of bio-fuel. No power was available with which to periodically run a pump for irrigation, and to continuously run a monitor/pump controller to determine when the pump should be activated. Otto Hoffman, an Associate Professor of Engineering, contacted Winpower West to see if The Self Starter™ generator could fill their needs. It was part of the solution, but we pointed out that to run the controller continuously, they would also need a separate power supply for that purpose. We then suggested an integrated solution that would:

• Start the generator when water needed to be pumped
• Through the addition of a deep cycle battery, we provided power for the controller through an inverter and also provided the power to start the generator
• With the addition of a custom designed switching mechanism, allow the generator to start and charge the battery if it was getting low – without running the pump, but whenever the pump needed to run, it would also charge the battery
